Day10 Introductions and Conclusions

Objectives: We will be able to...
  • Identify the key components of an introduction of argumentative essays
  • Distinguish between good thesis statements and bad thesis statements
  • Write a clear, direct thesis statement
  • Identify the key components of a good concluding paragraph.
  • Practice writing a conclusion of an argumentative essay and peer review others’ conclusions.
  • Review the main components of introductions and conclusions of argumentative essays.
Warm up (5 min)"What have you done to get your reader interested in your writing in the past?" 
"What kind of information have you written to introduce your writing? or conclude your writing?"
Analyzing Sample Introductions (10 min)
Identify what kind of information is in the introduction paragraphs, after about 4-5 minutes,
join a person who has the other paragraph and compare notes.
Introductions PPT (5 min)
Discuss each part of the introduction paragraph.
Review two-part thesis statement.
Conclusion (5 min)
In groups of 3 or 4, put the scrambled sentences into the right order.
You should be able to provide the reasons why you think the order is the best one.
Analyzing sample conclusion paragraphs (5 min)
Read the SAMPLE ESSAY. Pull out the important parts of the conclusion paragraph.
We will have a short discussion to discover what information we noticed that the author included in the conclusion.
