Objectives:

  • Describe the communication model and its application to writing(i.e. the goal of writing is to make the receiver’s (reader’s) perception match the sender’s (writer’s) intended meaning)
  • Explain broad and general cultural differences in writing(e.g. vocabulary, organizational structures, formality)
  • Anticipate cultural difficulties and challenges that should be overcome to advance in English EAP writing

2. Reflective Essay

In 200-300 words, respond to all of the following questions:
What is your favorite piece of writing? It might be a novel,  a comic book, or an article from a journal, magazine, or newspaper. What is it called and what is it about? Why is it your favorite? Using what you have learned from this class, what is its purpose? Who is its audience? How is it similar to or different from the kind of writing we will do in this class?
The reflective essay will be graded on the quality of and effort put into it rather than the grammar or paragraph structure.
Formatting: submit your response as a Microsoft Word file using 12-pt. , Times New Roman font.  Your essay should be double-spaced and have 1-inch margins on all four sides. Please time yourself and spend no more than 60 minutes on your essay.
***Please note: Honest writing is the most helpful.
